SEC Successfully Completes Statewide Voter Registration Check

An Important Step in Maintaining the Accuracy and Integrity of Elections

COLUMBIA, SC (July 8, 2025) – The South Carolina State Election Commission (SEC) has successfully completed a statewide voter confirmation mailing and related voter list maintenance efforts, an important step in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of South Carolina’s voter registration list.

In April 2025, the SEC mailed confirmation cards to more than 191,000 registered voters who had not voted or updated their registration since the 2020 General Election. These voters were asked to verify or update their registration information to help ensure they remain active and eligible to vote in future elections.

As of July 1, 2025:

  • Approximately 23,000 voters remain active. These voters responded to the confirmation mailing and confirmed that their registration information is correct.
  • Approximately 168,000 voters have been made inactive. These voters did not respond within the 90-day period, had their card returned by the post office as undeliverable, or responded to the mailing confirming that their registration should be made inactive.

Inactive status does not mean a voter is removed. Inactive voters remain eligible to vote and can reactivate their registration by voting or updating their information at scVOTES.gov.

Voters whose mail was returned undeliverable are immediately marked inactive. Their names remain on the voter registration list through the next general election. Voters who received a confirmation card but did not respond remain on the list for two general election cycles before being removed, unless they update or confirm their registration.

“The business of running elections doesn’t end on Election Day,” said Howie Knapp, Executive Director of the SEC. “This process is a critical tool to keep our voter registration list accurate and up to date. It’s one of the many ways we safeguard the integrity of our elections and ensure every eligible South Carolinian can vote with confidence.”

The confirmation mailing is part of the SEC’s ongoing responsibility to uphold the security and accuracy of the state’s voter rolls, as required by the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA). Voters are encouraged to check and update their registration at scVOTES.gov or by contacting their county voter registration office.
